We are fortunate to have such a wide array of cosmetic treatments available today, allowing every person customizable skin care. Every person is different, and has specific skin concerns that need to be addressed. At Pure Skin Dermatology, one of the treatments Dr. Grayman regularly provides is that of microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion, which has been shown to clean the skin and unclog pores, is now believed to be an effective anti-aging treatment, prompting the deeper layers of skin to produce collagen. The term microdermabrasion describes the process of using tiny rough grains, such as crystals, to gently buff away the outermost layer of the skin. Most commonly, this cosmetic treatment is applied to the hands, face, chest and neck to uncover more youthful skin.
Microdermabrasion for anti-aging
By removing dead skin cells on the epidermis, microdermabrasion can improve the look of skin, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and smoothing the texture of skin. The treatment also decreases pore size, reduces hyperpigmentation such as age spots or sun spots, and decreases the appearance of existing scars. This treatment is also sometimes used before the application of cosmeceutical products, to enable optimal penetration of such products into the deeper layers of the skin.
Safe and effective, microdermabrasion may be applied to all skin types and colors to improve the appearance of the skin's surface. The machine used in this procedure is adjustable in order to meet each patient's specific needs. A mild treatment, microdermabrasion is even suitable for those with sensitive skin, but may not be effective at removing scars or stretch marks, deep acne scars or keloids.
Best results from microdermabrasion come from a series of treatments provided by our skilled esthetician. After a thorough consultation with Dr. Grayman, a treatment plan will be discussed and a session scheduled. Sessions are typically scheduled ten to fourteen days apart, with the patient advised to practice heightened sun protection in between treatments.
The only side effect associated with microdermabrasion is eye irritation. We take care of this by providing eye protection to be worn during a treatment session. Following treatment, the patient is advised to use high SPF sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure in the first few days following treatment.
