Excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) is a condition that affects more than 1 million people in the U.S. This can be very embarrassing to the people who suffer from it, leaving them uncomfortable in social settings. They may be afraid to lift their arms, buy new clothes, or even go out on dates. Dr. Grayman offers Botox treatments as a way to treat underarm sweating that is not responding to clinical strength antiperspirants.
Dr. Grayman will begin by discussing your medical and family history, and when you first discovered the problem. You will be asked how the underarm sweating affects your daily activities through a self assessment test. Once the diagnosis has been made, she will discuss a treatment plan with you that may include Botox.
How Botox can stop excessive underarm sweating:
Botox is FDA approved for the treatment of severe underarm sweating. The Botox neurotoxin is injected into the armpit. The Botox then binds itself to the nerve endings near the injection site, acting as an obstruction, and blocks the signal between the nerve endings and the sweat glands. Once that chemical signal is no longer received by the sweat glands, the severe sweating will stop.
What are Botox treatments are like?
The Botox solution is injected into the underarm area with fine needle placed just underneath the skin. There may by some injection site side effects such as mild discomfort, pain, bleeding, sore throat, fever, headache, itching, back pain, and anxiety. There are typically about 15 injections during the session and will last about ten minutes.
Patients will notice significant reduction in underarm sweating within one month of treatment. Approved since 2004 by the FDA, Botox injections for underarm sweating may include several injection points in the affected area. Treatment is expected to last about six months and will not affect sweating in other areas of the body. It is important to note that Botox treatments are not a cure for underarm sweating. Symptoms will gradually return as it becomes time for another treatment. Dr. Grayman and her team will come up with a treatment plan that works for you.
