What is surgical dermatology?
Dermatologic surgery is the practice of dermatology that specializes in surgical procedures and minimally invasive treatments to improve the health, function, and appearance of the skin. Surgical dermatologists diagnose and treat conditions that affect the skin, nails, hair, mucous membranes, and adjacent tissues. The purpose of surgical dermatology is to repair or improve the functionality and appearance of the skin. Thanks to advances in surgical dermatology, the majority of surgeries are now minimally invasive and require only local or regional anesthesia. This results in less downtime and speedier recovery periods.
Treating Skin Cancer
At Pure Skin Dermatology and Aesthetics, LLC in Orlando, Dr. Debra Grayman will treat skin conditions that require some sort of surgical excision. The two basic types of skin cancer treated are non-melanoma and malignant melanoma. If a suspicious growth is present, a biopsy is done to confirm a skin cancer. If a biopsy shows skin cancer, we can schedule a full excision or refer to a Mohs Micrographic Surgeon. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a precise surgical technique that involves removing tissues one layer at a time. The tissue is examined under a microscope, and the procedure continues until an area is cancer-free.
Even when a full excision is needed, most cases can be treated in our office using local anesthetic to numb the area. The growth is then removed, and the area is closed with sutures. The patient will be supplied with aftercare instructions to ensure optimal results. Depending on the size and location of the growth, cryosurgery may also be a suitable treatment. This involves spraying cold liquid nitrogen to destroy cancerous cells. Other treatment modalities include: topical chemotherapy and electrodessication + curettage
